Foreign doctors who wish to practise in Karlsruhe must first prove that they have sufficient language skills. Basic German is not enough because you need to be able to communicate with patients and colleagues at a high level. You can prove your language skills by taking the Fachsprachenprüfung (FSP). The language school Aktiv in Karlsruhe prepares you for this exam with intensive courses and individual lessons.
How to acquire language skills at a high level
In order to successfully participate in the professional language examination, you need knowledge at the C1 level, as this is the only way you can communicate with professional colleagues in German. Level B2 is sufficient for daily conversations with patients. The type and duration of the preparatory course depend on your previous education. If you already know German well, you can start the preparatory course straight away. If, on the other hand, your language skills are not yet that advanced, you should attend more general courses first.

Exam preparation through an intensive course
Assuming sufficient basic knowledge of German, the intensive course lasts 2 months. You will have daily lessons from 9:00 to 12:00. You will practise the German language using concrete examples taken from the working environment of a medical doctor. The groups are small so that you often have the opportunity to practise the German language.
If you took your exam in a country of the European Union, you can take the professional language exam directly at Sprachschule Aktiv in Karlsruhe.
If this is not the case, you take the exam at the medical association. Location makes difference, because in both cases, the exam topics are similar.

The course consists of two modules, each lasting one month.
The entire course costs 1198 Euros. You can also book only one module, which costs 699 Euros. For optimal preparation we recommend that you take both modules.

- Aufklärungsgespräch mit Patienten (Erklärung der Behandlungen)

Exam preparation by a private teacher
If you are unable to attend classes regularly or if the journey to Karlsruhe is not convenient, we will be happy to find a private teacher for you. This teacher will also provide you intensive preparation for the technical language examination.

We only leave the preparation course for the FSP to very specific teachers. Like all our language teachers, they have pedagogical training and are native speakers of German. In addition, we make sure that they have a medical background, i.e. that they can teach you the vocabulary of a doctor. They know the demands you face as a doctor in daily practice.
